Health and Physical Education

Health  (0.5 Credits, 1 Year)
Through this course students will learn about all aspects of health and how to evaluate their own health choices.  Students will investigate health topics including media influence, drug use/abuse, nutrition, fitness, stress management, goal setting, decision making, personal hygiene, the body systems and more.  Students will complete one written report and poster project, as well as several labs throughout the course. Students will be assessed through classroom participation, homework, projects, tests, and quizzes.

Weight Training (0.5 Credits, 1 Year)
This course is designed to teach students how to evaluate their personal physical fitness levels as well as how to create a plan to improve upon it.  In this course students will design and write their own personal fitness plan, and then implement it throughout the school year. In addition, focus will be placed on what the student hopes to accomplish, as well as what goals they are trying to attain.   Areas of focus will be on muscular strength, flexibility, body composition, muscular endurance, and cardiovascular endurance.  Students will be assessed through the written project and classroom participation.

High School Physical Education (0.5 Credits, 1 Year)
This course stresses participation and instruction in a wide range of games and fitness activities. The results are skill development, an improved fitness level, socialization and cooperation among the student population as well as a realistic attitude on the body's capabilities. The goal of the Physical Education Department is for each and every student to leave high school with a base knowledge in a variety of lifetime activities and the desire and the means to maintain a physically active and healthy life.  This is done through units in field hockey, soccer, football, basketball, volleyball, badminton, fly fishing, softball, capture the flag, and ultimate Frisbee.  In addition students are required to complete fitness testing in the fall and spring in accordance with New York State Standards.   Students will be assessed through class participation and written tests.
