Congratulations to Hancock senior Michael Makowski, Hancock’s 2021 recipient of the Akshar All-Star Award!
New York State Senator Fred Akshar personally congratulated Michael during a special Zoom event moderated by Hancock PK-12 Principal Julie Bergman on Friday morning. Superintendent Terry Dougherty, among the dozens of Zoom participants, praised Michael for his hard work and character in becoming the fourth Hancock student to earn the award.
Each month during the school year, Senator Akshar recognizes local students from his 52nd District who have shown great leadership, compassion, school spirit and/or improvement amongst their peers. Students are nominated by their districts, and Akshar typically follows up with a visit to meet the winner in person. Because of COVID-19, Akshar has been congratulating this year’s winners via Zoom.
Michael was nominated by Mrs. Bergman, who wrote the following in her nomination letter to Akshar: “I have had the pleasure of knowing Michael for three years. ... He is friendly, polite, and well-liked and respected by his peers and teachers. He is a role model, providing friendship and leadership while demonstrating good decision-making and a positive attitude.”
Her letter was accompanied by a bevy of supporting information, with lists and notes highlighting Michael’s success at Hancock High School: National Honor Society, YES Leads, Student Council, Spanish Club, Church Group, Yearbook Club, and Chorus … Scholar-Athlete in Baseball, Basketball, and Golf, with a first season of varsity football coming soon … Consistently in the Top 5 of his class academically … Volunteers for programs that help younger students … and Perfect Attendance for all four of his high school years to boot.
Michael can now add 2021 Akshar All-Star to his list of accomplishments, which is sure to keep growing after graduation. Hancock’s previous Akshar All-Stars were Kelsey Young (2020), Owen Wormuth (2019) and Thomas Schoonmaker (2018).
