Makowski recognized by YES Safe Choices
Michael Makowski 2019

Congratulations to Hancock High School junior Michael Makowski Jr., the YES Safe Choices Student of the Month for December.

Michael is in his third year with the YES Safe Choices program, a youth-led initiative focused on drug and alcohol prevention that’s co-sponsored by Lourdes and Senator Fred Akshar. High school students who participate in YES Safe Choices meet with younger kids throughout the school year to discuss the dangers of drugs and alcohol.

“Michael is always enthusiastic when our group meets,” Hancock YES Safe Choices Adviser Meghan Smith said of Makowski, who was inducted into the National Honor Society earlier this school year. “He is often the first to offer suggestions, and I can always count on him to attend our meetings and events.

“Michael is a well-rounded student who takes his academics seriously while also participating in YES Safe Choices, student government and athletics,” she continued. “His favorite part of YES Safe Choices is being able to interact with the younger students in our district.”

Lana Evanitsky, Sierra Francisco, Brenna Gleim, Christopher Gross, Alexis Lopez, Roger Newman, Emmi Rubera, Christian Sokol and Kelsey Young also represent Hancock High School in the YES Safe Choices program, which has 17 Southern Tier members.
