Wormuth honored as Akshar All-Star
Akshar All-Star Owen Wormuth with parents, Senator Akshar and Hancock staff

Owen Wormuth is having quite a senior year. The past few weeks haven’t been too bad, either.

Days after earning a Senior Recognition Award for Outstanding Academic Achievement, Owen received special recognition from Senator Fred Akshar as Hancock’s 2019 Akshar All-Star.

Akshar presented the award and an Akshar All-Star T-shirt to Owen during a Thursday-morning assembly in the Hancock Middle School/High School Auditorium. Akshar All-Star Awards, established in 2017, honor students in Akshar’s 52nd Senate District who have shown great leadership, compassion, school spirit or improvement amongst their peers.

Owen embodies the Wildcat spirit as a standout student-athlete who serves the Hancock Central School District and his community in several capacities. A board member of the Friends of the Upper Delaware River, Owen’s resume also includes membership in the National Honor Society, Student Council (four years) and the Southern Tier YES Leads program.

The three-sport athlete, who led Deposit-Hancock to the Class D state baseball title last spring, finished his senior wrestling season earlier this month as Hancock’s all-time leader in varsity victories, with 145. A football player during the fall, Owen has placed in five Section 4 wrestling tournaments and is a volunteer for the Hancock Youth Wrestling Program and the American Legion Veterans Dinner.

This past Monday, the HCSD Board of Education bestowed its prestigious Senior Recognition Award for Outstanding Academic Achievement to Owen and classmate Haylee Zartman during its regularly scheduled meeting in the District Board Room.

Hancock welcomed Akshar to the district Thursday to present his All-Star Award, then held a question-and-answer session for the student body led by Owen and fellow National Honor Society members Riley Ostrander, Kelsey Young and Roger Newman.

Akshar also spent time with students one-on-one and later posed for photos with Owen, parents Butch and Kara Wormuth, BOE President Terry Whitt, BOE Vice President Rebecca Smith, Superintendent Terry Dougherty, Principal Deb Darling and Director of Pupil Personnel Julie Bergman.
