Former Hancock Central School Principal Mike Williams has returned to the district for the start of the 2021-2022 school year and will serve as Interim PK-12 Principal while Superintendent Terry Dougherty is on medical leave.

Williams assumes the duties of PK-12 Principal Julie Bergman, approved by Hancock’s Board of Education to serve as Interim Superintendent in Dr. Dougherty’s absence. Dr. Dougherty plans to resume his 20th year as HCSD Superintendent in late November.

“I want to help kids get back into a normal school environment and make it as seamless as possible for everyone,” said Williams, a Wilkes-Barre native who toured the world as a professional musician after earning a Music and Education degree from Wilkes College in the 1980s.

Williams shifted his focus to education in 1994, starting a new career as a music teacher at Liberty High School. He went on to serve as middle/high school principal at Hancock (2004-2008), junior-senior high school principal at Fallsburg (2008-2018), and superintendent of the Tri-Valley Central School District (2018-2021).

Williams and his wife, Christine, live in Liberty and have two adult daughters. Brittany is an elementary school teacher like her mother, and Gillian is a registered nurse.
