The SERVPRO professional cleaning service has given the Hancock Central School District Benefect’s Botanical Decon 30 Disinfectant to regularly clean, sanitize and disinfect the crawl space recently affected by a cracked sewer pipe under Hancock Elementary School.
Botanical Decon 30 will be used daily in the crawl-space area – already cleaned professionally three times by SERVPRO – to ensure the HES building remains extremely safe for ongoing occupancy and attendance.
Approved by the United States Environmental Protection Agency to deep clean schools, Botanical Decon 30 is composed of a patented blend of essential oils that kills 99.99 percent of bacteria in 30 seconds. The no-rinse formula’s active ingredient is 0.05-percent of Thymol – a component of Thyme Oil – and is safe to use on food-contact surfaces and even children’s toys.
Botanical Decon 30 is a bactericidal, fungicidal/fungistatic, virucidal, antimicrobial germicide used by schools, hospitals, daycare facilities, gyms and other public places for the restoration, decontamination and remediation of hard, nonporous surfaces. Botanical Decon 30 effectively eliminates odors without leaving behind harsh fumes or harmful residue.
Hancock’s use of Botanical Decon 30 is part of the district’s comprehensive corrective-action plan, created in conjunction with the New York State Education Department, the New York State Department of Health and HCSD’s certified environmental consultant. The plan calls for the continued daily use of Botanical Decon 30 as a safety precaution until further notice.
HES Daily Inspection/Cleaning Procedures | Hancock Elementary School Crawl Space
Hancock Elementary School closed from September 29-October 10 to address a cracked sewer pipe in a crawl space under the building. During this temporary closure, the Hancock Central School District implemented a comprehensive corrective-action approach to repair the sewer pipe and clean up a related, contained leak that posed no threat to the environment.
Hancock Elementary School was deemed safe to reopen October 11, as per the New York State Education Department, the New York State Department of Health and HCSD’s certified environmental consultant. To ensure the HES building remains extremely safe for ongoing occupancy and attendance, the following inspection/cleaning procedures will take place every school day at HES:
- HCSD Director of Facilities Maintenance and Transportation Jodi Newman or a member of our custodial staff will conduct an in-person inspection of the crawl space at 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. The inspector will complete/initial a check list during/after each inspection. Any odors or changes in overlay material detected will be immediately reported. Temperature and humidity devices will be installed and checked during each of these visual inspections.
- The crawl space will be sprayed with Botanical Decon 30 Disinfectant from SERVPRO, a professional cleaning, sanitizing and disinfection service that certified the completion of thorough cleanings on October 7, 8 and 13. Botanical Decon 30 Disinfectant, which kills 99.99 percent of bacteria in 30 seconds, is safe to use in public facilities.
- HCSD Director of Facilities Maintenance and Transportation Jodi Newman and HES Principal Thomas Durkot will conduct morning and afternoon walkthroughs of the entire building and check with students and staff for related issues, if any.
- Water will be run through all building drains and drinking faucets twice a day. This will keep traps full of water as a precautionary effort to keep odors, if any, at bay.
- An odor detected by anyone should be immediately reported to an HCSD administrator and/or staff member, who will then contact the custodial staff to investigate. All custodial staff members have been instructed to contact HCSD Director of Facilities Maintenance and Transportation Jodi Newman as soon as possible after an odor has been reported.
